Introducing Working On Our Journey

We are Sandy and Steve Axelrod, also known as The Traveling Locavores. Steve and I are so thrilled to be introducing our new blog Working On Our Journey!

I’d like to begin by telling how we got here.

We were accustomed to running a traditional sticks and bricks business in South Florida for 18 years. We were pretty much forced to close our catering company Affairs to Remember Catering due to financial hardships placed on us by Hurricane Wilma. We catered our last party for 500 guests in early February 2006. Now what?

Because I had started creating one of a kind jewelry as a hobby, we decided I should turn it into a career. So, on a whim, we bought our first RV. We traveling the eastern third of the country for six months doing art shows on the weekends and sightseeing during the week. We didn’t set the world on fire, but we were covering our expenses. And we fell in love with the lifestyle.

In fact we loved it so much that we were ready to sell our home and travel full time. Or should I say, we were ready until I saw the realtor’s photos of our newly renovated home. I realized that we had not had enough time to enjoy the gorgeous home we had created. So we never listed our house.

Lots of life changes got in the way, some good and some not so good. But in 2016 we knew we wanted to live our dream of traveling the country full time. That’s when we began searching for the perfect RV to live and travel in. Unfortunately it took us 3 full years to find “the one”.

Fast forward to late 2019. We found a 37-foot Class A motorhome with 2 slide outs, a great floor plan and lots of storage in Franklin NC. It was far from new but had low mileage and had been slightly renovated by the current owner. It was the first motorhome that we had looked at the was actually better than the photos online. We bought it and dubbed her Ladybug. Steve and I took possession the day after Christmas and enjoyed a week on the road back to Florida.

The plan was to make a whole bunch of cosmetic changes over the next 2-3 months, put the house on the market and head out. You can see the before and afters here: RV Renovations Complete The Big Reveal. But we all know what happened in 2020! Covid-19 forced us all into isolation.

By the end of April our renovations were almost finished and we decided to list our home. It sold in one day and our buyers needed possession in 30 days. Yikes! We hustled to pack and move everything into Ladybug.

On June 1, 2020 we pulled out of our driveway and never looked back. It has been the best decision we ever made.

But what we soon learned is that life on the road had become much more expensive than it was in 2006. We started to research businesses that could be run from anywhere.

We had 3 criteria, a business needed to give us time freedom, money freedom and better health!

Though we had not been successful with Network Marketing in the past, we kept searching for the right business. Not only have we found great companies, we have found amazing mentors. We have become part of teams that actually help you succeed. That’s why we want to share our stories with you here at Working on our journey!

Our mission is to help you reach your goals and inspire you. We only succeed when we are helping others succeed.

Each of my future posts will give you insight into the businesses that we have become involved in and what we love about them.
