Sage Advice for Entrepreneurs

I’ve been writing one blog or another for over 15 years. I get 100s of emails about running a business with invites to lots of bundles, webinars and classes. In one of those Ultimate Bundles was an eBook “Biz Tips From Entrepreneurs” that contained such sage advice for entrepreneurs like us, that I had to share it.

All of the experts were asked a group of questions that you might ask if you were having coffee with a business expert that you regarded highly.

The advice is in the form of quotes from a great line-up of entrepreneurs. Some of them are familiar to me because of my blogging experience, others not so much. But all of them have some wonderful advice we should all heed!

The first question asked was: What was the best business advice you have ever received? Who gave you that advice? Their answers to that first question are what I’m going to share in this post.

Mike Michalowicz, best selling author and Fortune 500 company founder, said that his business mentor t0ld him “don’t listen to me”. Then he clarified by saying “It’s because you’ll get advice from experts that are just as biased as anyone else. It’s ultimately the customers wallets that speak the truth. Always listen to wallets.”

Ruth Soukup, NTT Best Selling Author, podcaster and business coach, shared advice from Danny DeArmas. “No one else knows what they’re doing either. We’re all just making it up as we go along.”

Kevin Harrington was one of the original sharks from Shark Tank as well as a bestselling author and the inventor of the infomercial. His response to the first question was: “I can summarize this into 2 quotes that had a huge impact on me.” The first is from Zig Ziglar: “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” The second quote is from Paul J. Meyer: “Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe, and enthusiastically act upon must inevitably come to pass.”

Justin Wise, keynote speaker as well as a published author, business consultant and Pragmatic Marketing Certified, replied: “How you do anything is how you do everything.” Though he couldn’t remember where he got that quote, he said that it’s made him pay attention to every single small detail in his business. “From grammar on landing pages to bookkeeping, everything communicates something about you and your business.”

Matt McWilliams is a leading expert on affiliate market as well as a consultant to top entrepreneurs and companies. HIs answer was: “My old boss and my best friend gave me the same advice on the same day without talking to each other when I asked them about starting my consulting business. Whatever you thing you’re worth, charge twice as much.”

Bestselling author, editor and publishing strategist AJ Harper quoted one of the panelists Mike Michalowicz: “You are not the only person who can do what you do. Set your ego aside and breakdown your systems so that you can teach them to others.”

Monica Froese has an MBA in Finance and Marketing, but I know her as a Pinterest marketing expert. This is what Monica had to say: “Right before I quit my job to pursue my blog full time I attended a mastermind event in Chicago. I sat next to another blogger, Lena Gott, who had just crossed her first $10,000 month. She told me that the first $50 I made online would be the hardest. She said going $5,000 to $10,000 was much easier than getting to $1,000 because of the momentum she created along the way. The morale of her story was this: hard work and consistency pays off. If you want to succeed you need to show up day in and day out even when it’s hard and boring.”

Business mentor Tash Corbin said that two quotes resonated with her so much that they were pinned on her wall. “Start before you are ready” and “It’s my time, and I am ready for the next step.”

Ted Prodromou is America’s leading Linkedin Coach and bestselling author. His advice: “Perry Marshall told me never to rely on one traffic source. Diversify your traffic so you are not affected by big changes at Google or Facebook.” This advice would apply to network marketing as well. That’s why Steve and I belong to a variety of networking businesses. You know the old saying “Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket!”

Anna Powers, Certified Coach, said that her mentor “Dan Miller, author of the bestseller 48 Days to the Work You Love, taught me to ask myself a very powerful question in the face of any challenge: ‘What does this make possible?’ Asking this question has given me incredible perspective on any wrinkle or hurdle in business. Every obstacle can become an opportunity if you’re willing to look at it that way!”

The launch director behind dozens of bestselling books and leading digital marketing expert Amber Vilhauer had this to say: “No Guts No Glory! I loved that phrase so much that I named my company after it, ‘NGNG Enterprises.’ is a phrase my mom used to say to me all the time growing up. What better piece of advice to remember as I face my fears every day to help others and get my gifts out to the world…and now I’m on a mission to help my clients and community adopt the same mentality. It’s time for us all to step out of our own way and use our talents to make this world a better place!”

And the last answer to the question is from Cyndi Thomas who is a bestselling author and Mastery Level Certified Profit First Professional. She had very simple but impactful and sage advice for entrepreneurs: “Decide Act Learn Repeat” from Brad Martineau and “on a similar thread from many years ago, Plan Do Check Act – Dr. Edwards Deming.”
